romanesque (also Norman in England)

Romanesque is the therm that describes the style of architecture and art of Europe from late 10th century to the Gothic style during the 12th century. Romanesque architecture is characterised by the massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy piers, groin vaults, large towers and decorative arcading. Each building has clearly defined forms and they are frequently of very regular, symmetrical plan. Stones were the main material for the buildings and the walls often were without plastering.
